Lowes Foods Named Grocer for 751 South Community!

As 751 South continues to take shape, Homes By Dickerson is excited about our involvement with this new development near Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham! Check out the below article announcing that Lowes Foods will be the grocery for the 751 South Community (written by Ben Graham of The Triangle Business Journal):

“A 166-acre master planned community in south Durham that is progressing after a decade of uncertainty has received another shot in the
arm, this time from a grocer that has signed on for space at a new mixed-use center.  Lowes Foods will open a 50,000-square-foot store at the 751 South community in the summer of 2020, anchoring a larger 300,000-square-foot retail complex.  That’s according to Alex Mitchell, president of 751 South, who says the grocery store will help usher in a new wave of development in the sprawling community, located off N.C. 751 between Stagecoach Road and the Chatham County line.
Mitchell likens the project to “building a village” and says the combination of ground-floor retail with residencies above will “create a boulevard where people can shop and live and work, much like parts of [Raleigh’s] North Hills.”
The grocery store will feature some of Lowes Foods staples, such as the Community Table, the Beer Den and SausageWorks, as well as an online food ordering service.  Mitchell estimates the larger build out will exceed $500 million and take place over seven to 10 years. Later phases include apartments and two 150,000-square-foot office buildings, rising as tall as 5 stories.  Home lots have already been developed, and all are either sold or under contract.


“That helps alleviate a lot of the clock concerns,” Mitchell says.
Homebuilders working at the community include Saussy Burbank, Homes by Dickerson and Loyd Builders. Vertical construction has begun on a handful of homes, which are now being offered for sale.  The residential portion of the development has been chugging along in recent
months, after the project spent years mired in a lengthy and contentious planning process. Durham city leaders initially opposed a request to annex the property, raising concerns about the community’s size and potential environmental impacts, including whether it would prove detrimental to Jordan Lake and its aquifer.  Legislation passed by the state in 2013 finally forced the city’s hand. Since then,
concerns have been raised about the relationship between elected officials and the
developers behind 751 South.  A report earlier this year by the News & Observer revealed that Rep. Tim Moore,
speaker of the N.C. House, had been hired as an attorney for a company called KNOW Bio that was founded by a partner in the 751 South development, Neal Hunter, also a founder of Cree. Moore had previously helped pass the legislation that cleared the way for the 751 South development.”
