Interior Design Styles

Homes By Dickerson believes your home should be an original — designed and built exclusively for you. Whether your taste is contemporary and minimalist, or traditional and extravagant, our award-winning home designers will work closely with you to achieve an incredible-looking home that perfectly reflects your style. Here are a few of the most popular design styles our team has had the pleasure of completing recently for our customers!

Popular Home Interior Design Plans for 2022

Modern Colonial

This style is characterized by grand entrances, dark polished wood, neutral walls, and luxurious textures on items like sofas, pillows, and chairs. Global influences appear throughout modern colonial style, through unique textiles and/or interesting prints. There’s also a slightly tropical vibe, with large palms and other tropical plants making an appearance, as well as classic cane chairs, and accents made from natural materials.

Modern Cottage

Modern cottage style borrows elements from nostalgic country homes to achieve a cozy, warm feeling, but is updated  to appeal to modern sensibilities. Do keep traditional cottage elements, like natural materials — wood beams and flooring, exposed brick, woven textiles — a welcoming fireplace, and of course, a farmhouse sink. Don’t overwhelm the space with too much furniture or too many trinkets — keep it light and airy with neutral walls and well-organized, open kitchen shelving.

French Country

French country design takes its cue from the estates of Provence with their maximalist aesthetics. Think floral curtains against a backdrop of floral wallpaper, with intricately-designed furniture. Of course, the modern look is a bit more toned down, but retains some of the extravagant styling, such as on light fixtures, framed portraits, or iron stair balusters.

Dark and Moody

Some rooms in the home just require more peace and quiet — bedrooms, a library, or even a small den or living room. Whether you need a space to catch up on sleep, watch movies, or bury yourself in a good book, there are ways to achieve the look without going overboard. Balance dark painted walls with light flooring, furniture, and even houseplants to prevent the space from feeling too cave-like.

Contemporary Minimalist

Simple but never boring, contemporary minimalism is all about focusing on one striking aspect of a room. That might mean opting for white walls in order to focus the eye on the stunning floor-to-ceiling windows. Or keeping all the furniture monochromatic to highlight an impressive fireplace. There is actually a lot of creativity in minimalist design; and it is a style that’s hard to achieve without careful thought and intentional focus.

Coastal

The coastal aesthetic is achieved by incorporating elements, materials, and colors from the seaside into your home. With shades of blues and greens, natural materials such as driftwood, hemp rope, and seashells, and light and airy fabrics like cotton and linen, the effect is calming, serene, and entirely peaceful.

Modern Tudor

The modern tudor interior design style is characterized by stately decor, bright and open spaces, unobstructed windows, ceiling treatments, and iron finishes — all while maintaining the comfort of a family home.

Modern Farmhouse

Whitewashed walls, timber beams, and contrasting metals embody this mix of contemporary and country, calm and cozy. While nothing should be overly fragile, the space should maintain a certain sophistication. Neutral color palettes are the base for the contemporary component of this style, mixed with anything that is rustic, distressed or natural.

Declutter The Home of Your Life in the New Year

Declutter The Home of Your Life in the New Year

You may have heard about the recent “home decluttering” trend, but have you put a plan of your own into motion? If 2019 brought an abundance of extra items into your living space, then 2020 is all about getting rid of what you don’t need — and keeping the things that serve a purpose in your life.

At Homes By Dickerson, we believe that 2020 is your year to enjoy the little moments without the stress of unnecessary clutter. With a new home in Raleigh, NC and Charleston, SC that’s as organized as you need it to be, you can sit back, relax, and take in the best things that life has to offer. Take a look at our favorite tips and tricks to declutter your stuff.

How To Declutter Your Home

Decide What To Store: Before you start, it’s a good idea to “assess your mess” and make a smart decision about how much storage you may want to buy. Go through each room and envision the bins you’ll need to keep everything clean and tidy, whether it’s fabric bins for your rec room or plastic bins for food storage.

Hanging organizer.

Use Your Doors: Don’t underestimate the versatility of doors! The back of a door can be a life-saver. For instance, a great idea in one of your guest suites or bonus rooms is to use an over-the-door organizer, shoe rack, or hook rack will free up space while storing everything from shoes and jackets to hats, belts, scarves, and anything else you need.

Master closet.

Clean Your Closet: First things first, ask yourself: “Do I really need it?” Donate items you don’t wear or don’t make you feel great, and keep the ones you love. You’ll be amazed at how much easier (and more enjoyable) it is to step into a clean and organized walk-in closet that only holds the things you truly enjoy.

Tupperware.

Free Up Your Fridge: It’s so easy for a refrigerator to become cluttered with food, no matter the size of your family. Because boxes, containers, and bags that hold leftovers take up so much space, make it a habit to put your food in your own Tupperware once you get home and label them with the date. Pro tip: do the same with bulk foods, snacks, etc. in your kitchen’s custom-built pantry to free up even more space.

Ladder shelf.

Stay Trendy: A beautiful storage ottoman is not only a comfortable seat in your master bedroom, it’s a great way to keep items off the floor. Similarly, functional and stylish ladder shelves are perfect for picture frames, candles, succulents, watches and jewelry, books, and so much more.

Recipe Box.

Organize Recipes: We all grow attached to our favorite recipes, but that doesn’t mean we need the whole cookbook. One way to free up extra space in your open, gourmet kitchen is to scan the recipes you use and love from cookbooks, cut out your favorites from magazines, and organize them into clear pages in a binder.

Living room.

Start Small: If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, a great way to destress is to do simple tasks like making your bed. A few quick ways to clear your home (and your head) are to fluff up and organize the pillows on your couch, straighten up your rugs, dust off counters and windows, and wipe down tables.

At Homes By Dickerson, we have a good feeling that 2020 is going to be your best year yet. With a little decluttering in your spacious and comfortable home, you have the chance to start off every day with a breath of fresh air. Homes By Dickerson Winter Newsletter!

Homes By Dickerson Winter Newsletter!

Though it may not feel incredibly winter-like outside, our team is excited to bring you The Homes By Dickerson Winter Newsletter!  After the success of our debut edition in October, we worked diligently to gather the information and visuals important to our prospective buyers, our current homeowners and our devoted Realtors.  Now, let’s shake off the glitter from the holidays and enter the New Year ready to accomplish goals and find inspiration!

Click here to view the Winter 2020 edition of our newsletter!

Six years ago, our leadership team began formulating our 2020 plan which outlined where we saw our company heading in the next decade.  Since that time our plan has been reviewed and studied on a daily basis and has come to tell us more about ourselves than just the bottom line numbers.  It has become a road map of sorts on a variety of goals and has helped us define who we are as a company and what we value.  The 2020 plan has encouraged us to ask the tough questions, create effective processes, and determine our place in this market and in this industry.  What we recognize is that no matter the growth or changes we have seen, we simply remain a group of passionate professionals who build homes that are right for our clients and right for the environment.  Now, the new decade is upon us and our 2020 plan has become a reality.  We are proud to be achieving the goals we set six years ago, an accolade attested to the hard work and dedication of our team.  We know that the building process is not perfect.  It can be long, messy and challenging but we strive to educate you, support you, and make this process as easy as we can-all while building you the highest quality, highest-performance home possible.

So now we raise our classes to you: our current homeowners, future buyers, and loyal Realtor friends!  Here is to a brand-new decade full of new design trends, new communities, new floor plans, creativity, and innovation.

And now on to planning for 2025…

Let’s Talk Design: An Interview with Turner Underhill
by Cali Buhrman, Marketing Coordinator

Have you ever walked into a model or staged home and thought to yourself, “Oh my, these designs are amazing!”

Everything flows together perfectly, the décor complements the home features, and you are instantly in love.

Working around gorgeous homes at Wendell Falls, I know the feeling well—which is why I was so excited to
down with Turner Underhill, the designer behind Homes By Dickerson’s custom plans in our community.
Read our interview below to hear what Turner had to say about inspiration, her favorite home so far,
and what sets Homes By Dickerson apart from any other homebuilder.

CB: There are so many great homebuilders in the Triangle. What sets Homes By Dickerson apart?

TU: Homes by Dickerson is not only a custom green home builder, but we also pride ourselves on the fact that
clients can walk through our spec houses and know that what they see is a “standard” option and would be
included in the base price of the home.  We have wonderful options in our standard levels and as a designer,
we work hard keep our programs up to date and current (like tile, flooring, and backsplash programs).
Since we are a custom builder, we can do just about anything for our clients but we have many
homebuyers who are pleased and happy with the standard options.

CB: What’s the first thing you think about when designing a home? Do you usually know
immediately the character of the home and what you want it to be, or does it come together
later in the project?

TU: With each home I work on I come up with a theme.  I am given an elevation and a floor plan and from
there I create the bigger picture.  Whether it is a coastal farmhouse or masculine craftsman house, each home
has a main idea and I build on it from there.  I keep the theme in mind when picking exterior colors, interior
floor stains, backsplash tile, cabinet colors, etc.  A coastal farmhouse would be light and airy while a more
masculine house might have some stained elements and a darker overall color scheme.

CB: Okay I have to ask, do you have a favorite home you have designed at Wendell Falls so far?

TU: My favorite home in Wendell Falls so far is the Concord plan we built for Parade of Homes. It ended up
winning Gold in 2017 and our team loved the finished product! The theme for this house was actually a coastal
farmhouse and when you walk through the front door, you can see that come through and carry throughout the home.
