High Performance Green Features Highlighted in the Madison in Briar Chapel

High Performance Green Features Highlighted in the Madison in Briar Chapel

In case you didn’t get a chance to attend the recent Triangle Green Home Tour, we thought it might be helpful to highlight some of the innovative, high-performance features that were on display in the “Madison” entry by Homes By Dickerson in Briar Chapel:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat: 89% of programmable thermostats waste energy – about $173 a year, on average – because most people don’t bother to program them. The Nest, on the other hand, learns what temperatures you like and builds a schedule automatically. The device can also sense when you’re away from home, and turns itself down when you’re gone. You can even connect to it from a smartphone. By programming itself, the Nest can save up to 20% on your heating and cooling bills. See a demo of how the device works.
  • Solar-Ready Option: Homes By Dickerson now offers its customers the option to add a solar power system during the construction of their home. In the event a homeowner is not quite ready to invest in renewable energy, they offer the option to make the home “solar ready” by installing a dedicated electrical circuit and conduit for future solar panels.
  • Tankless Water Heater: natural-gas, tankless water heaters provide an endless supply of hot water. Unlike traditional tank-style water heaters that heat and reheat water all day long, even when you’re sleeping or away from home, tankless units save money on your energy bill by heating water only when needed. Since they are a fraction of the size of their larger predecessors, they also save valuable space. With a life expectancy of up to 20 years, they last twice as long as traditional water heaters. They also provide homeowners peace of mind by eliminating the concern of flooding due to a ruptured tank.
  • Advanced Framing: there was a great demo in the garage that showed how 2×6 exterior walls and advanced framing techniques allow for additional formaldehyde-free insulation to be installed, and how these work in tandem with radiant barrier roof sheathing and ZIP System air and moisture infiltration barrier to improve efficiency.
  • Sealed & Conditioned Crawl Space: the builder installed a see-thru floor to demonstrate the use of a sealed and conditioned crawl space, which provides a controlled environment for more efficient operation of cooling and heating systems in addition to several other benefits.
  • Independent Testing & Certification: a third-party (Southern Energy Management) conducted performance testing in order award Energy Star andNAHB green certifications.  Here is the certificate showing this home has qualified and been tested and passed for the BRONZE level certification.

This green-certified home is currently available for purchase.  If you would like to schedule a showing, please contact Peter Winkler at 919-360-1285 or Rob Jamison at 919-609-0374 or email info@homesbydickerson.com

Earth Day Festivities in Briar Chapel

Earth Day Festivities in Briar Chapel

Saturday April 20th was an all day celebration of Earth Day in Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill.  This is one of Briar Chapel’s favorite day’s of the year.  The morning kicked off with a 5k throughout the community and ended back in the new Phase 6-South Boulder Park.  An afternoon of live music, games, crafts and food truck rodeo was planned all benefiting the Abundance Foundation.  Earth Day celebrations also overlapped with the Green Home Tour so there were several homes in the community open for viewing including Homes by Dickerson’s Madison.

To view the entire Briar Chapel Community Photos from the day that were posted on their facebook album, click here.

Homes by Dickerson invited our Briar Chapel Homeowners to join us for Breakfast on the corner of Dark Forest and Bennett Mountain Trace to enjoy bagels and coffee and cheer on the runners of the 5k! It was a fun way to start the day.

Green Home Tour :: The Chamborde in Carrie’s Reach, Raleigh

Green Home Tour :: The Chamborde in Carrie’s Reach, Raleigh

The Chamborde is one of the first available homes in Homes by Dickerson’s newest exclusive community in North Raleigh, Carrie’s Reach. One acre wooded homesites surround these beautiful custom homes.   With only 17 homes sites available just minutes from 540 and Hwy 98 these are sure to sell quickly.

There is much to love about the design of the Chamborde.  A welcoming front porch, a large gourmet kitchen is great for entertaining and is open to the family room, breakfast nook and keeping room are just starters.  First floor guest suite also has its own entrance.  Mudroom offers 2 banks of lockers and a drop zone.  Large finished bonus room and a flex room upstairs would be great for an exercise or craft room.  Walk-up third floor attic is perfect for storage or could be finished off for even more space.  The Master Suite offers a beautiful trey ceiling, walk-in closet and master bathroom with double vanities, shower and garden tub.

The Chamborde is featured on the Green Home Tour happening in April.  Be sure to stop by and learn about how all of our high performance green features work together to make our homes more energy efficient.  These features create a more comfortable and durable home, save our homeowners money and lessen the impact on the environment.  Around the home you will find tent cards that point out all the features in the home that work together to obtain the green certification points necessary to get the Energy Star Certifications and the NAHB Research Center Certifications.

Green Home Tour :: The Madison in Briar Chapel, Chapel Hill

Green Home Tour :: The Madison in Briar Chapel, Chapel Hill

The Madison is the newest addition to Homes by Dickerson’s Briar Chapel Carolina Collection.  This home has been very well received in Raleigh and with the ability to build on larger home sites in Briar Chapel it was the perfect time to introduce this home in Chapel Hill. To showcase this new home, the Madison has been selected to be on the Green Home Tour happening in April.

Offering 4 bedrooms with an option for a 5th, a finished bonus room, first floor office and a guest suite are just some of the great features to this home.  Many love the oversized mudroom and pantry along with the giant island in the kitchen which is great for entertaining or just for every day life.   The screen porch is great for relaxing.  Walk-in storage on the second floor makes organizing and access a breeze for the things you don’t need to get to everyday.  The laundry room is on the second floor and offers plenty of room for moving around and a window for lots of natural light coming in.  The master suite offers lots of counter top space, separate tub and shower and large walk-in closet.   Stop over to take a look for yourself at this great home located at 688 Bennett Mountain Trace in Chapel Hill.

In addition to our standard high performance green features, we have decided to highlight in this home a solar pre-wire, the Nest digital thermostat, sealed crawl space cut-out and a mock-up of how our homes are framed so you can see what is happening behind the walls and how all of these things work together to create a more high performing energy efficient home for our homeowners.

Here are some pictures of the home and if you would like to take a look at the virtual tour, click here.

Save the Date :: Green Home Tour 2013 coming in April

Save the Date :: Green Home Tour 2013 coming in April

The Green Home Tour has grown substantially larger over the last couple of years.  Homes by Dickerson has been a member of the Green Home Builders of the Triangle as well as making building green a company initiative since 2009.  All of our homes are both Energy Star certified and NAHB Green Certified.

Jon Showalter, our Comptroller and Green enthusiast explains in this video why it is important for a builder to enter a home in the Green Home Tour, not only to attract more buyers, but to really help educate them on why building a high performance green home makes a more comfortable, healthier and more sustainable home, as well as lessens the impact on the environment and saves its owners money on utilities.

Look for more details on the two homes we will have entered into the Green Home Tour coming up on April 13th, 14th and 20th, 21st 2013.   Homes will be open each day from 12pm to 5pm for a free self-guided tour.  One will be located in Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill and the other in Carrie’s Reach in North Raleigh.  Our Company representatives will be available to help answer your questions on how we build our homes.

If you have questions on any of our high performance green homes or want to learn more, please contact info@homesbydickerson.com  or call 919.847.4447 .  You can also learn more about just a few of the ways Homes by Dickerson builds high performance green homes, you can check out our website by clicking here
