A decade ago, we made a very important decision as a building company-a decision which changed how we build each of our custom homes.  We wanted to differentiate ourselves from the competition but most importantly, we wanted to provide higher-performing homes for our clients and for the environment.  So, we got to work.  We researched vendors and programs, studied qualifications, earned certifications, and became an expert in our field-all with the intention of benefitting those who have chosen to become Homes By Dickerson homeowners.

Over the last 10 years, we have continued to embrace high-performance green building, earning us recognition as a 2018 National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Green Partner of Excellence, 2018 Major Achievements in Marketing Excellence (MAME) Best Green Home award winner, and a 2018 Market Leader Award from Energy Star (just to name a few!).

Homes By Dickerson is also honored to be a leading high-performance builder with the most single-family homes certified to the NGBS in the country*. As stewards of our client’s investment, we are dedicated to providing quality homes that offer savings, health, comfort, and sustainability. Building to the NGBS standard requires more than checking a box for energy standards, it means that our homes are designed and constructed to meet a minimum number of criteria in water efficiency, home site design, sustainable materials, indoor air quality, and homeowner education to achieve certification.  As Jon Showalter, Homes By Dickerson COO, mentions in our new high-performance video, we just do not know how to build any other way.

We know that high-performance, green building does not resonate with everyone.  Let’s face it-there is a lot of technical jargon that is not very sexy and it does not give you the cheapest per square footage cost.  What it does give you is quality and peace of mind.  The bottom line is that when you purchase a Homes By Dickerson home you are getting more than just a custom design from an incredibly talented team of individuals.  You are in fact purchasing a home that can save you money on your monthly utility bills, provide better air quality for your family, and is kinder to our environment.

We hope that our decision 10 years ago to build only high-performance homes will make your decision easier today to build The Home of Your Life with Homes By Dickerson!

North Carolina Building Performance Association Reports the Value of Building High Performance Homes

North Carolina Building Performance Association Reports the Value of Building High Performance Homes

It is no secret that Homes By Dickerson has a passion for and a commitment to building high-performance homes.  In fact, each of our custom designs are Energy Star Certified, crafted to the National Green Building Standard and voluntarily built to the NC HERO Code.  On an even larger scale, Homes By Dickerson builds more homes to the NGBS standard than any other builder in the state of North Carolina resulting in our homes accounting for 5% of all homes in the United States built to the NGBS standard.

As impressive as all of this sounds, what does this mean about the value of our homes, especially the value of our homes to our buyers?  The list of reasons why one should purchase a home built to the highest high-performance expectations possible is eye-opening.  It includes saving money on monthly bills, better health opportunities for you and your family due to a better air quality, and benefits to our environment-just to name a few.

The report below, sent out by The North Carolina Building Performance Association (a third party) reports that high-performance homes bring more value to the market than the alternative.  Check out these interesting statistics and findings!

PRESS RELEASE: Report finds 9.5% premium for high performance homes sold in North Carolina’s metro markets

Homes by Dickerson Recognized as Home Innovation
NGBS Green Certification Partner of Excellence

Local Builder Applauded for Excellence in Advancing
High-Performance Mainstream Home Building;
Award Recognition Event Set for Thursday, August 1

RALEIGH, NC, JULY 18, 2013 – Homes By Dickerson has been recognized as one of Home Innovation Research Labs’ 45 Green Partners of Excellence for 2012-2013. Being one of only a handful of builder participants across the nation in Home Innovation’s green certification program to be honored with this award underscores the commitment Homes By Dickerson has made to providing its customers with increased value, comfort, durability, and efficiency through its NGBS Green Certified homes.

“We’ve gone through a lot of changes in this last year – changes in the industry, in our company, and in the National Green Building Standard,” said Home Innovation Labs president and CEO Michael Luzier. “While all the changes have been extremely positive, we recognize it takes a lot for a company or an individual to ‘roll with the punches’ and persevere with the same level of enthusiasm and excellence in a certification program as rigorous as ours. That is why this year we were compelled to recognize the significant commitment to innovation and leadership in the residential construction industry that some of our NGBS Green Partners have displayed. We are truly impressed and inspired by what companies like Homes By Dickerson are achieving in the field and the market transformation they are helping to accomplish.”

In the last year, Homes By Dickerson constructed over 100 homes in the Triangle area that were NGBS Green Certified by Home Innovation Research Labs to the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard (NGBS). These certified homes include energy and resource-conserving features such as sealed crawl spaces, advanced framing techniques, no-rot exterior materials that increase durability, properly sized HVAC systems which save energy and increase indoor air quality, programmable thermostats, formaldehyde-free insulation, Energy Star Certification, water-efficient plumbing fixtures, low-VOC paints, regionally appropriate landscaping design and construction waste recycling.  This “whole system” approach to building homes creates a more comfortable, healthier home that saves buyers money and lessens environmental impact.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as one of the elite green builders in the country by Home Innovation Labs,” said Linwood Strickland, president of Homes By Dickerson. “We are passionate about making the Triangle area a better place to live through green, sustainable building practices which benefit both our buyers and the wider community through resource conservation and green building leadership in the local market.  Building green makes for healthier homes, happier buyers and it’s the right thing to do on many levels.”

To earn certification to the National Green Building Standard, a home must meet rigorous criteria in six categories – Lot & Site Development; Resource Efficiency; Energy Efficiency; Water Efficiency; Indoor Environmental Quality; and Homeowner Education. There are mandatory practices in each category that every NGBS Green Certified home must meet, and there are a wide range of additional optional practices in each category that a builder can select based on the applicability to buyers in their market. There are also mandatory point minimums in every category in order for a home to attain the next level of certification, which is a more stringent requirement than any other national certification program has.

Since the National Green Building Standard became the first and only residential green building rating system to be approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in January 2009, Home Innovation Research Labs has certified over 20,500 new and remodeled single-family homes, apartments, and lots within green land developments.
