How to Design with Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year: Very Peri

How to Design with Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year: Very Peri

Carefree, curious, creative — these are all words that have been used to describe Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year, Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938). This new and fresh periwinkle-like purple is a member of the blue family, but its violet red undertone makes it playful and interesting.

Here’s how Pantone describes the color: “With trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse, and rising artistic community in the digital space, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.”

So if Very Peri excites you, how exactly do you use it in home design? We have a few suggestions:

Neutral With a Touch of Color

Very Peri is an intensely saturated, bright, and unique color, so starting with small applications and pairing it with neutrals like ivory and green is a great way to introduce it into your home. You can:

  • Use it as a wall accent color in a bedroom or office. You’ll be inspired from the moment you wake up or sit down to work.
  • Bring in peeks of the color in decor like a patterned rug, floral arrangements, pillows, an upholstered chair, or artwork.
  • Combine it not only with natural colors, but also natural elements — like woven baskets, rugs or light wood accents — to play off its calming qualities.

Bold & Beautiful

Very Peri is not a color to be ignored! Play up its statement-making qualities and make it front and center. You can:

  • Use a lighter version on full walls of a room, such as a dining room or study, to feel a fresh feeling.
  • Opt for the fully-saturated color on the walls of smaller spaces, such as a bathroom, study, or den.
  • Bring it outside and paint your front door or shutters this imaginative color to add a bit of whimsy.
  • Look for large-scale artwork with this as a prominent color to display on a neutral wall.

However you choose to use Very Peri, it’s sure to inspire joy, creativity, and imagination! For more design ideas, browse our gallery or contact us to schedule a tour of a model home.

Parade of Style, Meet the Designer: Kelsey Hennington!

Parade of Style, Meet the Designer: Kelsey Hennington!

As we continue to prepare for our Parade of Homes event at the end of September, we want to introduce you to another one of our talented designers behind our 10 unique homes! We’re excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look into how Kelsey Hennington designed our Life of Hygge home.

Before joining our team, Kelsey focused on interior design renovations and worked as a project manager for a high-end custom builder. With a natural eye for aesthetics and innovation, Kelsey is passionate about staying ahead of trends and looking for new ways to bring fresh insights and ideas to her clients. A native of Hickory, NC — the heart of the furniture industry — Kelsey is in tune with the quality and craftsmanship of all the products she works with. Outside of the office, she loves to spend time traveling with her husband and their sweet, energetic fur baby. Get to know more about this incredible designer and her distinct thought process!

What inspired you to create Life of Hygge’s unique design and theme?

Life of hygge

A Nordic/Scandinavian theme is not something we often see in this area, so I wanted to start with something fresh and new! I’m in a place in my life of simplifying and being very intentional in what I bring into my home, the people I surround myself with, and just being the most present that I can be. This design theme is really much more of a lifestyle and way of living, and in my design research it felt exactly like what I have been focusing on personally, so it really spoke to me!

What is your favorite part about designing homes featured in the Parade of Homes?

I often have ideas throughout the year that I fall in love with but don’t necessarily fit into that “inventory home” feel, needing to attract the most people as possible. So being able to bring those unique ideas to life during the Parade of Homes is the perfect opportunity to really test the boundaries. I love challenging myself with unique ideas, then translating those challenges in the field to make them happen. So it really turns into a growing and learning opportunity for the whole team.

Why do you love living in Raleigh? What is your favorite activity to do here?

Raleigh is such a melting pot of people and experiences. There’s always something new opening that you can’t keep up! I love that you can literally drive 20 minutes, in any direction, outside of Raleigh and have a completely different experience of food, culture, and nature. Yet we all call “Raleigh” home. Some of my favorite activities include college football, the State Fair, the variety of restaurants and breweries, and hopping on the greenway for a walk or bike ride. There’s always something going on, so finding something to do is never hard.

Parade of Style, Meet the Designer: Turner Hairr!

Parade of Style, Meet the Designer: Turner Hairr!

As we gear up for our Parade of Homes event at the end of September, we want to introduce you to the talented designers behind our 10 beautiful homes! Each designer chose distinctive selections to fit a certain theme, and we’re excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look into their unique thought process. This week, our team is happy to introduce you to Turner Hairr, who designed our Staycation and Belle Vue homes.

Before joining our team, Turner worked in customer service, furniture sales, and home staging, and is equally passionate about design, colors, aesthetics, and customer care. Outside of the office, she loves to spend time outdoors with her husband, daughter, and cocker spaniel, Easton, and relax on the beach at Topsail Island. Get to know a little bit more about this incredible designer and the unique touch she brought to each home!

What inspired you for your Staycation unique design theme?

Staycation

My inspiration behind this home was the beach and the feeling of being by the coast. (Not necessarily the NC coast, but maybe Cape Cod.) That’s where the name “Staycation” came from. I wanted you to walk inside the home and immediately feel like you were at the beach or on vacation. The shades of blue and natural wood tones help to bring this feeling to life.

What inspired you for your Belle Vue unique design theme?

Belle Vue

The inspiration behind this home was California Vineyards. I wanted to do a home that had a French Country feeling to it, but also put more of a modern twist on it. The name “Belle Vue” actually means “beautiful view” in French (how fitting)! The pops of matte black mixed with medium-toned woods and gray-greens are prominent in this home. I have vine-like wallpaper accents and simple trim features throughout to help pull this theme together!

What is your favorite part about designing homes featured in the Parade of Homes?

My favorite part about designing homes in the POH is being able to take risks and give the home a bit more personality. POH allows a designer to do things they may not do on a traditional inventory home. It’s so fun to create an idea on paper and then see it come to life months down the road, and have other people walk through and be able to see and love that theme you worked so hard to create.

Why do you love working in the Raleigh area?

Being in Raleigh is great for so many reasons. My favorite thing about it is the amount of opportunities to be outside. Whether it’s walking a trail, shopping, or grabbing dinner and a drink, there are so many ways to be outside and enjoy the city. It allows you to meet new people and enjoy new experiences.

We can’t wait for you to experience the singular details of the Staycation and Belle Vue homes at Homes By Dickerson’s Parade of Style during the 2020 Triangle Parade of Homes! For more information about this event, please contact us at 919-205-3404.

Let’s Talk Design: An Interview with Turner Underhill
by Cali Buhrman, Marketing Coordinator

Have you ever walked into a model or staged home and thought to yourself, “Oh my, these designs are amazing!”

Everything flows together perfectly, the décor complements the home features, and you are instantly in love.

Working around gorgeous homes at Wendell Falls, I know the feeling well—which is why I was so excited to
down with Turner Underhill, the designer behind Homes By Dickerson’s custom plans in our community.
Read our interview below to hear what Turner had to say about inspiration, her favorite home so far,
and what sets Homes By Dickerson apart from any other homebuilder.

CB: There are so many great homebuilders in the Triangle. What sets Homes By Dickerson apart?

TU: Homes by Dickerson is not only a custom green home builder, but we also pride ourselves on the fact that
clients can walk through our spec houses and know that what they see is a “standard” option and would be
included in the base price of the home.  We have wonderful options in our standard levels and as a designer,
we work hard keep our programs up to date and current (like tile, flooring, and backsplash programs).
Since we are a custom builder, we can do just about anything for our clients but we have many
homebuyers who are pleased and happy with the standard options.

CB: What’s the first thing you think about when designing a home? Do you usually know
immediately the character of the home and what you want it to be, or does it come together
later in the project?

TU: With each home I work on I come up with a theme.  I am given an elevation and a floor plan and from
there I create the bigger picture.  Whether it is a coastal farmhouse or masculine craftsman house, each home
has a main idea and I build on it from there.  I keep the theme in mind when picking exterior colors, interior
floor stains, backsplash tile, cabinet colors, etc.  A coastal farmhouse would be light and airy while a more
masculine house might have some stained elements and a darker overall color scheme.

CB: Okay I have to ask, do you have a favorite home you have designed at Wendell Falls so far?

TU: My favorite home in Wendell Falls so far is the Concord plan we built for Parade of Homes. It ended up
winning Gold in 2017 and our team loved the finished product! The theme for this house was actually a coastal
farmhouse and when you walk through the front door, you can see that come through and carry throughout the home.
