The Blueprint Begins

Homes by Dickerson (HBD) was founded by Louis Dickerson. That same year, HBD earned its first Wake County Parade of Homes award. Louis also began developing land and lots and sourced paint products from Raleigh Paint and Wallpaper, owned by Alton Strickland.

1984-1994

Passing The Torch, Building The Future

Linwood Strickland, Alton Strickland’s son, joined HBD. During this time, ownership of the company transitioned from Louis Dickerson to Linwood Strickland. In 1994, Jon Showalter became part of the HBD team.
1998

Foundation for Growth

Recognizing the influx of national builders in the Triangle area, Linwood Strickland envisioned elevating the HBD brand. He wrote a strategic business plan to guide future growth, establishing a Client Care department and publishing the HBD Client Care Manual. This plan prioritized Realtor engagement, builder accountability, and the eventual integration of in-house design services, setting the foundation for HBD's exceptional custom homebuilding experience.
2004

Passing The Torch, Building The Future

Brant Chesson joined HBD, expanding the team to four members. Together, they built 22 homes and achieved $8 million in revenue.
2006-2008

Strong Roots. Sustainable Rise

HBD welcomed Mike Mehringer in 2006, followed by Marc Masotti in 2007. That year, HBD also developed its first community, George’s Grant.

Brant Chesson began ownership of HBD during the onset of the housing recession. This challenging period defined HBD’s resilience, with a focus on cost management, growth strategies, bringing sales in house and market share expansion. The company built its first Energy Star-certified home, marking a commitment to sustainable building practices.

2009-2011

HBD built its first Bronze Level Green Home in 2009, solidifying its position as a leader in green building. In 2010, Cliff Atchison joined as CFO, and Homes By Dickerson Real Estate LLC was established. In 2011, HBD was honored to build the Duke Children’s Miracle Home.

2014-2016

A Smart Move Toward A Million-Dollar Milestone

The 2020 Plan, revealed in 2014, set ambitious goals of 182 homes and $100 million in revenue. By 2015, HBD surpassed 100 annual closings. In 2016, HBD was selected to build the prestigious HGTV Smart Home.
